It is almost that time of year when backpacks filled with coarse paper, remnants of pencils losing their skin and textbooks with the headline “Dharivanrunge Foiy” are put away until next time. Bags are packed, massive floaties are readied and families all over Maldives prepare to explore what is in store for their mid year holiday starting from 22 December 2022.

With a whole 2 weeks tantalizingly demanding rest, respite and a lot of fun, this time of year may be the best time you will have within the best Maldives has to offer. Here are some suggestions by Kaleo on what would make the upcoming school holidays more fun.

Swim alongside flying giants and the quiet, “biggest of them all”

There is a certain magic to the dance of Giant mantas flying and and out of their feeding frenzy of tiny little plankton in the water. Now imagine yourself in their midst, armed with just a snorkel and mask – watching as they swirl gracefully around you with not a care in the world. While the Baa Atoll Biosphere reserve at Hanifaru Bay has the most famous group of Mantas in Maldives, there are Manta spots littered throughout the atolls. You can choose to stay in Dharavandhoo and enjoy your sightseeing. However Guesthoises as far down south as Maafushi offer Manta packages. Don’t forget “the biggest fish of the sea”, with Whale Sharks out of Maamigili and Dhigurah being most famous for its resident little family that usually come up for a feed all year round. You may need to glide faster than ever alongside these giants as it is one of those experiences where they look like they are swimming in slow motion but they actually cover a huge distance in a short amount of time. Little tip! Be sure to take the long walk along Dhigurah Thundi for a different experience.

Walk alongside the steps of history up in the north …

Coral stone facades and beautiful carvings welcome you at Ihavandhoo mosque, more than 300 years after it was completed. Learn about the rich history behind this mosque still in use today as you. There are few who are unmoved by the blood-red ceiling inscriptions, the calculated geometry of the structure and seen the pages of history through the wood lattice of the window screens. Hop on over to an equally enduring sight – the stronghold of the national hero in Utheemu Ganduvaru. Built somewhere between 1512 and 1528, the birthplace of Mohamed Thakurufaanu is one of the better preserved structures with the dark wood in contrast to the whitest of white under any ray of sunshine leaves the visitor revisiting their own histories. Thanks to Raajje Transport Link RTL ferry, all it takes is a quick app download to spot the path that connects Ihavandhoo and Utheemu via H.A Dhidhoo

Seeing Green!

If you wish to take some respite from all the blue that this land of 99 percent ocean has to offer, look no further than ‘as green as it gets’ with Thoddoo. Take the little ones on a fascinating tour of the island most famous for its watermelons come every Ramadan. Feast your eyes along the rows and rows of greenery with the promise of harvest and schedule some time at the duck farm, only to stop by the famous Ruhgandu for that instagram picture. Take in a darker shade of green under the dimly lit coolie shade of Laamu Gan’s Paree fengandu, and transport yourself to a fantastical wonderland where sunlight tinkling off a cobweb even looks fantastic. Take a seat on one of the hammocks and breathe as you take in the lush greenery.
