Hamna Ahmed: young swimmer redefining the impossible

Words by Imthishal Mohamed

Swimmer Hamna Ahmed sets a remarkable example for Maldivian youth, to go above and beyond to attain the so-called unattainable. She first dipped her toes in the ocean at the petite age of 4, and ever since has not been able to remain dry. In 2012 she joined the SDP (swimming development program) and began swimming competitively. In Hamna’s very first try-out to make the junior team,
she was unexpectedly bumped up to senior team; the natural talent this young sportswoman possesses is quite evident in her persistence and determination.

Ever since, she has represented her motherland in numerous International competitions namely; the prominent Indian Ocean Island Games, South Asian Games and countless others held in countries such as; Mauritius, Hungary, Sri Lanka, Uzbekistan many more. None of this could be accomplished if Hamna did not have a fierce and hardworking disposition; she follows a training regime that shuffles around hours in the gym and water, which requires her to push herself to the limit 4 times a week.

Like many of us, this athlete too has an ambition that she shares a great deal of passion for. Rehabilitation sports and Sports physiotherapy is something that has always been close to Hamna, she further desires to educate herself in the following, so perhaps she too can lend a helping hand for those in need.

Hamna Ahmed found serenity in swimming, and it just so happened that she was particularly gifted in it. After years of consistent practice she has proven herself to be a disciplined and strong-minded swimmer. Her ultimate dream is to partaking in the Olympics, and because of her very character this seems closer to reality than any fantasy. In just a few years she has achieved more than expected of any 17 year old, who is to say what her next great conquest may be?
