It was when He&She initially launched Top Model: Maldives in 2018 when everyone collectively saw a vision of Maldives getting its first placement in Top Model of the World; to see a winner from Maldives who would go on to represent this exotic title in the global pageant. It was a far-reaching dream, until Mariyam Shainan brought laurels home to this country. This Maldivian Top Model has advanced into the Top 15 on a global platform and swelled our hearts with pride.
While the Top Model of the World arena is made up of fiercely competitive and formidable beauties from all across the world at the top of their game, Shaina emerged with a historic victory by placing in the Top 15. She was beautifully poised and embodied the elegance and sophistication worthy of an international pageant of this scale.
Statuesque with not only her body, but also in her strong confidence, she bagged the New Face Award during the final night where her enthralling aura was remarkable. She strutted the runway and left a resounding mark with her exceptional performance. This budding model went through a tremendous transformation within a very short span of time. We honor and commend her for undergoing that process and bringing about such a massive change within a mere month.
1. What made you decide to become a model?
As a child, I would envision myself as a model. So I would say that the dream of becoming a model had been ingrained in my childhood.
2. How did you feel when you were selected as Top Model of the Maldives 2022?
I was over the moon and really elated when I got the news that I was crowned. I actually had to keep pinching myself. Little did I know that I would be able to fulfill my long-overdue dream of becoming a model with such an incredible opportunity. This was the perfect stepping-stone into the modeling industry. More than anything, I was so ecstatic for getting this chance to embark on the journey of representing my beautiful country.
3. How do you handle the pressure and feedback from the vast audience?
Since I was assigned with such a huge responsibility of representing the Maldives on a world stage, the pressure was inevitably high. I personally feel that it was meditation that helped me to stay calm, composed and collected throughout the grueling training sessions and hectic schedules. As far as feedback is concerned, I tend to ignore comments that are directed at demeaning me. I try very hard not to let negativity take a stronghold in my mind. On the other hand I am also very appreciative of all the love and support I have gained from this vast audience. It is truly heart-warming.
4. How were the preparations and training sessions for Top Model of the World? Were they intense?
It was a very eye-opening and insightful experience filled with loads of fun. The set of mentors that I had, truly enriched me with their invaluable expertise and assistance. From the strenuous fitness sessions to learning ramp-walk from scratch, they groomed me in the best possible way. I have gained so much wisdom from each of them and they have induced so much confidence in me in a way that I can always put my best foot forward. It wasn’t intense in the sense that all of my mentors were so easy-going and have always ensured that I felt comfortable and at home. They played the most pivotal part in molding and nurturing me into the best version of myself and that was seen during the pageant. It was a delight working with each and every one of my mentors and I eagerly looked forward to every session.
5. Could you describe your overall experience in the Top Model of the World?
It was a very exhilarating experience to say the least. Ranging from themed shoots to adrenaline- filled tours and electrifying parties, every single day used to be extremely eventful. I found it very thrilling to dress up every day in the most exquisite outfits. It truly made me feel like a real-life doll. The strong sense of sisterhood that was fostered with the other contestants is also one of the biggest highlights. The host country warmly welcomed us with open arms and the entire organization was so accommodating, approachable and hospitable. Our chaperones ensured that we were safe and secure whenever we stepped out of our rooms. I also cannot forget my angelic roommate, whose generosity knew no bounds. She taught me so many tips and techniques that worked wonders. I would like to give a special shout-out to her as these tricks definitely helped me elevate my performance. The whole WBO team has put together an intimate, yet excellent show where we all thrived. Overall, this is an indelible journey. I will forever cherish the memories I created during this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.
6. You are the first Maldivian ever to advance into Top 15 and you even won the New Face Award. What was your reaction to it and what do you think led you to that moment?
It was unbelievable! I felt so in shock and dazed, I am sure that was quite palpable. The feeling is still sinking in. It was so surreal. Never in my wildest dreams did I think I could achieve such a remarkable milestone and be a part of making history. I think that what led me to that moment was God’s grace and my authenticity. Amongst the other 45 girls, I knew I was unique and quirky. I am unapologetically my authentic self without trying to imitate somebody else and I think that propelled me to Top 15. I can also very humbly still recognize that I did very well during personal interviews. Interviews usually tend to be pretty nerve-wracking but I am glad I was able to articulate my thoughts well. And that was because I was completely uninhibited and sincere.
7. What’s the biggest learning experience you had in Top Model of the World?
I learned to be more genuine and to embrace myself exactly the way I am! I learnt that I should not be disheartened when I encounter people who dislike me for no valid or apparent reason. I learned that someone having a negative perception of you, doesn’t necessarily mean that you let go of your values, decency or manners. As long as you know for yourself that you are disciplined, have good intentions and a pure heart, that’s all that matters. I was comparatively reserved and shy before, but I have learnt the art of socializing, engaging and interacting with others through the pageant.
8. Which model inspires you the most and why?
Alexis Ren. I draw so much inspiration from her because even though she had to endure a lot of hardships and adversities, she didn’t despair. She courageously continued to follow her heart and went on to be an absolute glimmer of hope for other girls to build their confidence. Watching her grow and flourish despite the obstacles made me realize that I too have the power and capability to do the same thing if I strive for it.
9. Which model inspires you the most and why?
One must exude a lot of confidence to become a great model.
10. Which model inspires you the most and why?
I am mostly unwinding and processing everything. I plan to forge ahead in the modeling industry and conquer new heights by doing international shoots one day, Hopefully!
11. Anyone you’d like to thank? Who was instrumental in this win?
My family has been my driving force and my absolute pillars of strength. Especially my aunt, who approached Ms. Haneefa about my interest in modeling.
12. What is that one piece of advice that you’d like to impart on aspiring models?
To accept and embrace themselves. Don’t be too harsh on yourself. There’s great power in owning who you are.
