Growing up in the Maldives, a significant number of us enjoyed our adolescence outdoors, more often playing football, a primary sport of choice for most locals. Nevertheless, in recent years, basketball has gained considerable traction, and one name frequently associated with the sport is Mafaz Mohamed. From track & field to football to boxing and eventually basketball, Mafaz epitomizes what you might call a sports enthusiast. However, over the past decade, this athlete has made a strong impact in the professional realm of basketball.

The Player

At the age of 12, Mafaz began to prioritize basketball after participating in a youth development tournament organized by the Maldives Basketball Association. When questioned about his preference for basketball over other sports, he remarked, “It relates more to life”, Highlighting not only his hard work and determination but also his profound passion for the game, perhaps that is precisely what has propelled Mafaz to such great heights

Endowed with innate athleticism and unwavering discipline, Mafaz swiftly ascended through the tiers of local basketball leagues, he now leads the Raptors basketball club and represents the Maldivian national team. Known for his exceptional shooting skills, he is regarded as one of the top shooters in the Island. As a two-time 3-point champion and one of the premier perimeter shooters in Maldives, Mafaz stands at 5’8″ and plays the role of a combo guard for both his club and country. known for his impressive ball handling and unlimited shooting range, he is widely acknowledged as one of the most potent offensive players in Maldives.

The Coach

As a child, Mafaz had limited opportunities on the basketball court mainly because sports did not receive much importance or attention; studying took precedence. He recalls being able to play basketball for only three hours, due to inconsistencies and irregular scheduling, which is quite plainly nothing when compared to the ground time given to young players in this generation. One could argue that Mafaz endeavors to provide young players with everything he himself did not have when he was young.

Mafaz Mohamd currently holds roles as a gym trainer, skill development coach, and strength and conditioning coach for basketball players of all ages, offering both group and individual sessions. Known for his ability to inspire, Mafaz motivates each of his students to achieve their highest potential, leaving a lasting impact on his students who most definitely see him as a mentor and role model to emulate.

To overcome

Early in his career, Mafaz encountered numerous injuries that served as preparation for the dumps ahead. From setbacks and long periods on the bench to solitary efforts to regain his form, he persevered through adversity, actions that were the very definition of “true sportsmanship”.

Following numerous injuries, Mafaz grappled with a fear of physical contact on the court. Determined to find a solution, he sought ways to play without risking further injury. During his research, he came across the story of Steph Curry, who, like Mafaz, had faced injury related challenges but excelled as a sharpshooter. This discovery sparked a realization in Mafaz: a resolute inner voice declared, “I’m going to become the best shooter.” Years later, Mafaz has proven to do just that.

Mafaz’s influence transcends personal accomplishments. He is instrumental in the growing popularity of basketball in Maldives, nurturing a community of dedicated players and fans. His commitment to the sport has not only raised local competitive standards but has also garnered regional recognition for Maldivian basketball.

As Maldives increasingly embraces basketball as a favored sport, Mafaz Mohamed serves as a source of inspiration.
