Along the coast, an independent homegrown brand is gaining prominence in the Maldivian fashion community, through an artful yet whimsical fusion of nature and culture. Established in 2020 by Zayana (Zaya) Ahmed, this line is a personification of her artistic vision, showcasing breathtaking pieces that transcend mere accessories, serving as a mirror to the island’s intricate and inspiring earthly mosaic.

A graphic designer with over 8 years of full-time experience, Zaya uncovered the allure of cultural expression through art during her time in Sri Lanka. While pursuing her degree in Colombo city, she immersed herself in the local art scene, captivated by the craftsmanship of Sri Lankan artisans and the profound narratives woven through their skilled hands. Recognizing the beauty of intertwining art with heritage, she developed a deep passion for this connection, aspiring to pursue it in the future. Fueled by inspiration, she acknowledged that having her own product line was a longstanding dream on her bucket list.

The seed

Since 2016 Zaya has worked for Orca Media Group and now the Chief design editor, yet with a successful career she felt she had more to offer and say with a pencil in hand. In 2018, she initiated her journey into drawing and began posting pieces on her personal account. As her follower count grew, she transformed her account into a dedicated illustration space, known by many as Zayadraws, using this period to play around with her craft. With the increasing interest, she started receiving numerous inquiries regarding the availability of her art on products. It was at this juncture that a realization struck— the inspiration derived from Sri Lanka had resurfaced, reigniting her passion and motivation to create through roots once again.

Zaya experienced a moment of clarity, recognizing a gap in the Maldivian market where products often felt predictable and clichéd, lacking a genuine reflection of authenticity. She pondered a different approach, contemplating how she could showcase cultural elements in her products. Amidst the era of COVID, Zaya delved into product experimentation, tons of research and explored manufacturing possibilities. After countless back-and-forths, she finally began production, she expressed; “it was all in the hopes that it would bring an element of your home wherever you may travel”.

“A story to each piece”

Zaya personally crafted her inaugural product, managing every aspect from design to delivery, a practice she has maintained ever since. The first product introduced to the market was two pairs of earrings, one inspired by the ocean and the other, eagle rays. She stressed, “I draw inspiration from my surroundings—nature, florals, old houses, and the uniquely Maldivian swing sitting outside it”. However, every now and then she taps into her inner illustrator, she endeavors to infuse her curious yet quirky imagination into her creations. A prime example of this is her product “Mystical Manta rays,” where mantras appear to float in the sky.

In addition, she harbors a fascination for ancient architecture, and currently, the most widely seen product gracing the streets of the Maldives is the immensely popular Coco Hues Tote Bag. Featuring the sun, sly coconut trees, old houses, and the unmistakable Maldivian swing that many of us grew up on, this iconic tote is not only a visual delight but also designed for practicality. With front pockets, inner compartments, and a zipper closure, it is versatile and ideal for a multitude of uses.

Furthermore, Zaya’s products offer a comprehensive experience, meticulously planned and highly personalized. She notes, “Every product comes with distinctive packaging. Each and every backing card for the earrings features a different girl wearing them, accompanied by an envelope inspired by the vintage mailing system, complete with stamps, names, and addresses”.

The build-up

From being featured in the TMA inflight magazine to receiving inquiries from Mirihi Island Resort to showcase her products in their boutique, Zaya has undeniably made a significant impact. While doing so, she has unconsciously given every Maldivian the privilege to wear products that define who they are, a product that reeks nostalgia, a product that is both emotive and functional. Her influence serves as a testament to anyone aspiring to pursue their own path, affirming them that dreams can indeed transform into reality.
